Extending New Museum’s exhibition to 5000 pay phones




When, in 2013, New Museum held an exhibition to celebrate 1993, we went beyond the requested billboard.

We took the exhibition—which itself was conceived as a time capsule of 93’s the intersection of art, pop and politics in NYC—beyond the museum’s walls. Turning one of the era’s last relics into actual time machines.






With each pay phone having a unique phone number, our database was able to recognize from which exact corner people would call 1-855-FOR-1993 (unfortunately, no longer in service).


The caller would then be served a story specific to the area—if not the exact block—they were in.
